Festivals

Festival

A Greek Festival was and still is a social and religious event. Men used to search for brides in those festivals. At that time, the bride should be a good housewife, should know how to cook and knit, dance and sing. It was the only way that young people could meet each other.

Also traders used to come to festivals and sell their goods and handicrafts. Furthermore, when a Greek festival was held, many Greek immigrants would return to Greece. Everyone used to wear traditional costumes and enjoy the music.

In the community of Kalithies, most Festivals last for 3 days. They start the day before the celebrations of the local church, last all night and in the morning after church mass the festival begins. People dance and sing in the village square. They usually dance to local melodies such as Sirto, Kalamatiano, Roditiko Pidihto and Sousta.
